As announced by the National Football Foundation (NFF) on Wednesday (Sept. 25) morning, Ashland University senior inside linebacker Clay Shreve is one of 185 semifinalists for the 2019 William V. Campbell Trophy, presented by Mazda.
The Campbell Trophy recognizes an individual as the absolute best in the country for his combined academic success, football performance and exemplary community leadership. Shreve is one of 19 semifinalists from NCAA Division II.
Shreve is in his third season as a starter for the Eagles, and in three games in 2019, has recorded 27 total tackles (13 solo) and four tackles for loss. For his Ashland career, Shreve has 194 total tackles (86 solo), seven sacks, 21½ tackles for loss, a forced fumble and two fumble recoveries.
In 2018, Shreve was a second-team All-Super Region 3 selection by the NCAA Division II Conference Commissioner's Association (D2CCA), as well as first-team All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. He also was first-team All-GLIAC in 2017.
In the classroom, Shreve sports a cumulative grade-point average of 3.96 as a Middle Childhood Education major, and is a two-time member of the GLIAC All-Academic Excellence Team (cumulative grade-point average of 3.50-4.00).
Shreve also is active in community service/volunteerism, including mission trips to the Dominican Republic and as part of AU's Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He was the program's nominee for the 2019 American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Good Works Team.
The NFF will announce 12-14 finalists on Oct. 30, and each of them will receive an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship as a member of the NFF National Scholar-Athlete Class. One of the finalists will be named the winner of the 30th Campbell Trophy during the 62nd NFF Annual Awards Dinner on Dec. 10 in New York City, and his postgraduate scholarship will be increased to $25,000.
Nominees for the Campbell Trophy must be a senior or graduate student in their final year of eligibility, have a GPA of at least 3.2 on a 4.0 scale, have outstanding football ability as a first-team player or significant contributor, and have demonstrated strong leadership and citizenship. The candidates come from all levels of play in the NCAA and the NAIA.
