It's been a long time since Ashland University's football team has consistently won conference games by as razor-thin of a margin as the Eagles have done it during the 2019 season.
The Eagles (6-3 overall) are 5-2 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference following their 24-21 win at Saginaw Valley State on Saturday (Nov. 2) afternoon. Those five league victories have come by margins of three, three, three, nine and three points.
Ashland almost has as many conference wins by nine points or less this season as it had in the previous four seasons combined (seven). The last time the Eagles won at least five league games all by that slim of a margin was 2008, when they went 8-2 in the GLIAC, and five of those wins were by seven, seven, three, seven and seven points.
REICHELDERFER ENJOYS GAMES IN THE STATE UP NORTH
Ashland senior stud Tristan Reichelderfer has 10½ career sacks and 16½ career tackles for loss – and most of those have come in games played in Michigan.
On Saturday at the Cardinals, Reichelderfer tied Ashland single-game record for sacks with 3½, a record originally set by College Football Hall of Famer Bill Royce at Wayne State on Oct. 2, 1993, and tied by James Prater Jr. against the same Cardinals on Nov. 11, 2017.
Of Reichelderfer's 10½ career sacks, six have come in Michigan, and 8½ have come away from Jack Miller Stadium/Martinelli Field. Of his 16½ career tackles for loss, 10 have been recorded in Michigan, and 13 have been made away from home.
DENTON'S THREE-POINTER FROM DOWNTOWN
Junior kicker Satchel Denton hit a career-long 47-yard field goal in the fourth quarter of the win at SVSU – a field goal which ended up being the deciding margin of victory.
Denton's triple was Ashland's longest since Aidan Simenc's 48-yarder at home vs. Harding on Nov. 25, 2017, and is tied for the second-longest since Gregg Berkshire's 47-yarder at home vs. Indianapolis on Sept. 10, 2011. Denton made the Eagles' longest field goal on the road since Berkshire's 50-yarder at Northern Michigan on Sept. 25, 2010.
