FINDLAY, Ohio – In a rare November non-conference affair on Saturday (Nov. 9) afternoon, Findlay defeated Ashland University's football team, 53-18.

The Eagles are 6-4, while the Oilers are 7-3.

After leading Findlay 8-7 following the first quarter, Ashland was outscored 46-10 for the remainder of the game.

THE MOMENTS THAT MATTERED

- After both teams didn't score on their opening possession, Findlay running back Brian Benson scored on a five-yard touchdown run to put the Oilers up 7-0 with 7:06 to go in the opening quarter.

- With 2:17 remaining in the first period, sophomore quarterback Austin Brenner hit a sliding junior wide receiver Logan Bolin for a 10-yard touchdown pass. On the ensuing conversion, Brenner faked the extra-point hold and found freshman wide receiver Jake McLoughlin for the two-point pass which put AU ahead, 8-7.

- Findlay responded early in the second quarter, when quarterback Matt Winzeler found tight end Luke Stuffel for a two-yard touchdown. The Oilers' two-point attempt failed, leaving them ahead 13-8 just 35 seconds into the second.

- Junior kicker Satchel Denton made a 26-yard field goal with 9:22 to go until the halftime break, cutting the Eagle deficit to 13-11.

- The Oilers extended their first-half lead to 20-11 thanks to a Winzeler-to-running back Nate Slagel 19-yard touchdown pass, in which Slagel broke multiple tackles along the sideline.

- Ashland lost the second-half kickoff on a muff, and the Oilers were 35 yards away from another touchdown. On fourth down, Winzeler once again found Slagel for a 27-yard major, and even though the ensuing extra point was blocked, Findlay led 26-11 just 1:25 into the third quarter.

- Findlay extended its advantage to 33-11 with seven minutes left in the third on Winzeler's four-yard scoring strike to wide receiver Ruben Flowers. The Oilers to that point had scored 20 straight points.

- The Eagle comeback began with a one-yard touchdown run from sophomore tailback/fullback Austin Williams, as his first TD of 2019 made the score 33-18 with 4:28 remaining in the third period.

- Slagel added a 17-yard touchdown run to his two receiving scores, and even with another missed extra point, Findlay had a 39-18 lead just 34 seconds into the fourth. Junior Derek Lynch went around on a sweep and scored on an 18-yard run to make it a 46-18 contest.

- With another 17-yard scoring jaunt at the 3:59 mark, Slagel added his fourth touchdown of the game to make the score 53-18.
