Men’s Hoops Earns Opening 77-44 Win Against Battlers

Ashland University's men's basketball team won its 11th consecutive season-opening game, as the Eagles defeated Alderson Broaddus, 77-44, Friday night (Nov. 14) in the first day of the Third Annual Cedarville University Don Callan Classic.

The Eagles began to pull away from the Battlers early in the first half after senior forward Paul Honigford's 3-pointer gave AU an 11-9 advantage. That triple was the start of a 15-0 Ashland run. The Eagles had a 39-23 halftime lead and didn't look back.

Sophomore forward Wendell Davis paced Ashland with 15 points, while sophomore forward Jett Speelman added career-highs in points (14) and rebounds (six) in 23 minutes off the bench. Senior guard Brook Turson had 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the field, and sophomore guard Adrian Cook had 10 points, a career-high eight rebounds and a career-high-tying six assists in a reserve role.

Ashland shot 55.4 percent from the field (31-for-56) and turned the ball over just seven times.

The Eagles will return to the Callan Classic Saturday (Nov. 15) at 8:15 p.m. against Cedarville.
