Defense Keys Eagle Win, Ellenwood Climbs Record Book

Ninth-year head Ashland University men's basketball coach John Ellenwood moved into second all-time with his 130th victory, as the Eagles topped Ohio Dominican, 64-56, on Sunday (Nov. 12) in Columbus, Ohio.

AU (2-0) defeated Lake Erie 73-58 Friday (Nov. 10), marking the first time since 1986 that the program has held each of its first two opponents below 60 points.

Redshirt senior forward Wendell Davis led the Eagles against the Panthers (0-2) with 29 points, coming off of a 27-point performance in the win over the Storm. Davis now has 1,387 career points, moving up to 11th on Ashland's all-time list.

Ashland trailed 10-4 at the 16:04 mark in the first half. A few lead-changes were forthcoming, but a pair of made free throws by sophomore center Drew Noble gave AU a 13-12 lead with 11:25 left in the half that it would never relinquish.

Noble finished the game with 12 points and 12 rebounds, notching his first career double-dobule after scoring a career-high 29 in the opener.

Also joining in on the scoring for the Eagles with the first nine points of his collegiate career was redshirt freshman guard Aaron Thompson, who often receives praise for his defense.

Juniors Ben Haraway (12) and Phil Frentsos (two) also scored for Ashland.

AU held ODU to 37.9 percent overall and 19 percent from beyond the arc. The Eagles forced 19 turnovers, while committing just 11 themselves.

Ashland remains on the road as it travels to California, Pa., to take on the Vulcans in another non-conference matchup set for Wednesday (Nov. 15) at 7 p.m.
