AU Men Have Nine-Game Win Streak Snapped At Saginaw

Looking for 10 straight wins, Ashland University men's basketball had its streak broken on Thursday (Jan. 18) at Saginaw Valley State, 72-66.

SVSU's Mike Wells Jr. entered the second half with four points, but caught fire in the second, going 10-for-14 from the field and 5-for-5 from three to finish the game with 35 points. He accounted for 21 of SVSU's last 22 points. His career high was 23 before Thursday.

The Eagles (14-4, 7-3 GLIAC) had a 40-38 lead erased with 11:39 to go and they would never lead again, ultimately falling to the Cardinals (7-11, 4-6), who have won six straight against Ashland.

After trailing 69-61, AU forced three turnovers, scored five points, and had a chance to tie when junior guard Ben Haraway missed an open three-point look from the corner closest to his team's bench with 27 seconds left.

Senior forward Marsalis Hamilton matched his season high with 21 points, the same total he had Saturday (Jan. 13) against Purdue Northwest. Sophomore center Drew Noble chipped in with 19 points, and Haraway had 14.

Senior forward Wendell Davis was held to 10 points, his lowest total since he had eight when the win streak started on Dec. 7 vs. Wayne State.

Redshirt freshman guard Joey Zahn grabbed a career high five rebounds, tying him with Noble and fellow redshirt freshman Aaron Thompson for the team high against SVSU.

The Cardinals shot 41.2 percent from three, the team's third-highest total this season, behind Wells' stellar night.

AU will try to bounce back Saturday (Jan. 20) at Northwood in a GLIAC game set for 3 p.m. in Midland, Mich.
