Ashland University men's basketball head coach John Ellenwood announced Wednesday (June 20) the signing of Division I transfer guard Rodrick Caldwell to the program.
The junior transfer comes from Bowling Green State University and will have two years of eligibility remaining.
"Rodrick is a tremendous young man, who comes from an outstanding family," Ellenwood said. "He is a motivated basketball player and fits the type of character we look for in an Ashland University men's basketball player. I am excited to work with him next season."
Caldwell played in 63 games, starting 33, in his two seasons with the Falcons, who were 16-16 last season. The 5-foot-10, 175-pounder averaged 8.6 points and 2.6 assists while playing 24.8 minutes per game in 2017-18. He scored a season high 25 points against Abilene Christian.
In his career, Caldwell is a 36 percent shooter from the field and a 34 percent shooter from long distance.
"Rodrick is a multi-skilled player who has the ability to create for himself and his teammates," said Ellenwood. "He plays tough on both sides of the ball and will fit our offensive and defensive systems very well."
Caldwell, a native of Dayton, Ohio, prepped at Wayne High School for two seasons after transferring from Strivers School for the Arts. Caldwell led Wayne to an OHSAA Division I state championship as a junior, earning OHSAA Division I State Tournament MVP honors. He averaged 12.4 points per game as a senior at Wayne and 10.4 points as a junior. Caldwell also played AAU basketball for All-Ohio Red.
Caldwell joins a talented group of returners, along with four freshman newcomers and fellow Bowling Green State University transfer Derek Koch, who signed onto the program in April. The Eagles were 20-10 last season and were among the final four teams standing in the GLIAC Tournament for the third straight year.
