Caldwell Wins GLIAC South Player of the Week Honors

Ashland University junior guard Rodrick Caldwell earned GLIAC South Player of the Week honors the league office announced on Monday (Dec. 10) afternoon.

It is the second straight week an Ashland player has won the award with redshirt-sophomore guard Aaron Thompson taking the honors last week.

Caldwell averaged 20.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and 1.5 assists as the Eagles ran their season-opening winning streak to eight with a couple road victories at Grand Valley State and Davenport. Those teams entered the week with a combined 13-2 overall record. Ashland was ranked No. 19 in the nation last week.

He shot 54.5 percent (12-for-22) from the field and 58.8 percent (10-for-17) from 3-point range, hitting five 3-pointers in each game. Caldwell also went 7-for-8 from the free throw line.

In the 74-63 win at Grand Valley State on Thursday, Caldwell dropped 22 points on 7-for-13 shooting to go with seven rebounds and three assists. He was 5-for-10 from 3-point range.

The Dayton, Ohio native added 19 points and was 5-for-7 from long distance in AU's 72-60 win over Davenport.

In both games, Caldwell hit 3-pointers with under five minutes to play that stretched Ashland's lead from one to two possessions.

For the season, he is third in the GLIAC in scoring at 18 points per game. He also is sixth with 24 3-pointers and leads the conference with 36.4 minutes per game.

The Eagles (8-0, 4-0 GLIAC) will take their undefeated record into Saturday's (Dec. 15) game against Lawrence Tech. Tip-off at Kates Gymnasium is set for 7:30 p.m.
