The Ashland University men's basketball team climbed six spots to No. 10 in the NABC Division II coaches' poll released on Friday (Dec. 21) afternoon.
It is the first time since the poll on March 1, 2016 the Eagles have been ranked in the top 10. They were also ranked No. 10 in that poll. The last time Ashland was higher came on Feb. 25, 1991.
The Eagles (10-0) are off to the second-best start in program history, opening the season with 10 straight wins. The only team to start better was the 1990-91 squad that won 15 games in a row to open the season.
Ashland is coming off a couple of nonconference wins over Lawrence Tech, 86-55, last Saturday, and Kentucky Christian, 110-56, on Wednesday.
The Eagles are the only ranked team from the GLIAC and the second-highest ranked team in the loaded Midwest Region, which has Bellarmine ranked No. 1 in the nation.
The Eagles, under 10th-year head coach John Ellenwood, have one more nonconference game on Dec. 29 (3 p.m.) against Westminster (Pa.) before getting to the bulk of the GLIAC schedule in the first week of January when they take on Michigan Tech and Northern Michigan at Kates Gymnasium.
The next poll is set to be released on Jan. 8.
