Rob Gardiner is in his eighth year on the men's basketball staff. He began his AU tenure as a graduate assistant coach, and after two years in that role, was hired as a full-time assistant coach. He was promoted to the role of associate head coach prior to the 2019-20 season.

Gardiner is heavily involved in recruiting, on-floor coaching, practice preparation and scouting.

He came to AU from Wright State. He was a graduate assistant coach at Wright State from 2010-12.

At Wright State, Gardiner was active in every aspect of the program. He was heavily involved in scouting, and created and organized the playbook. He assisted with travel and creating travel itineraries. Gardiner was responsible for overseeing Wright State's film/video usage and equipment. He closely monitored the academic progress of players, and was one of the main contact with campus coaches and advisors. Gardiner was the assistant director of the Billy Donlon Basketball Camp.

Gardiner has worked as a summer coach at Dublin Coffman High School (2006-09). He coached the varsity team through the summer leagues and team camps. Gardiner conducted daily individual and team workouts.

Gardiner has worked as the co-camp director for the Dublin Coffman Summer Camp (2003-09).  He has been the co-camp director at the Chris Quinn Skill Development Camp (2007-09). In 2008, he was a coach with the Columbus Basketball Club AAU program.

The AU assistant coach played college basketball at Ohio Wesleyan. He played for four years and was a two-year captain. Gardiner played on the team that reached the NCAA Division III Sweet 16 in 2008.

Gardiner is a graduate of Dublin Coffman High School. He was a three-year starter, two-time first-team all-conference selection and a two-time team MVP.
