Roosevelt High School golfer Cole Smith has signed with Ashland University's men's golf team, and is Eagle head coach Darrin Jones' first 2015-16 recruit.
Smith is a two-time first-team Portage Trail Conference selection, and earned second-team all-district honors in 2014 and honorable mention all-district laurels in 2013. He earned medalist honors at the 2013 Big Cat Invitational at Shady Hollow, and was 2013 OHSAA sectional qualifier. Smith was part of a record-setting 9-hole team score of 139 (Smith shot a 34), and a record-setting 18-hole score of 294 (Smith shot a 73).
"I am really happy to have Cole with the Eagles," Jones said. "He is a very intelligent and driven young man, exactly the kind of player we want at AU. Has played and had success in a variety of high school and amateur competitions, and that experience will benefit him in his transition to collegiate golf."
Smith, a team captain his senior season, earned four varsity letters in golf for the Rough Riders.
