Playing its third round in the four days on Thursday (March 29), Ashland University's men's golf team certainly wasn't the worse for wear.

The first day of the Ohio Valley University Spring Championship in Byesville, Ohio, saw the Eagles take the lead in the 10-team tournament with an 18-hole team score of 1-over-par 289. Ashland's tied-for-second-lowest round of 2017-18 is 17 shots ahead of second-place West Liberty (306) and 19 shots ahead of both Wheeling Jesuit and Mount Vernon Nazarene (308).

Ashland is coming off playing on Monday (March 26) and Tuesday (March 27) in the Findlay Spring Invitational in Lexington, Ky.

Junior Austin Kondratick paced the individual field with a 4-under-par round of 68. It is Kondratick's third sub-70 round of the season, bested only by the 67 in the opening round of 2017-18.

Freshman Ben Jones is second overall after the first day of action thanks to a 1-under round of 71, a collegiate low. Senior Chandler Walnsch is the third Eagle to end Day 1 in the top 10 on the individual leaderboard, as he is tied for seventh with a round of 74.

Both sophomore Patrick Steffen and junior Cole Smith are tied for 12th with matching 76s.

Playing as individuals for Ashland on Thursday were junior Frank Steffen and freshman Hunter Lowder, who each finished in a tie for 19th with rounds of 77.
