Lately, the only thing that has stopped Ashland University's men's golf team is the weather.

After winning the Ohio Valley University Spring Championship to end March, then having the Mount Vernon Golf Invitational canceled, the Eagles began the eight-team Bill Blazer Memorial in Pataskala, Ohio, on Friday (April 13) in first place after 18 holes with a team score of 307.

Ashland is 11 shots in front of second-place Malone (318), and 27 shots ahead of third-place Ohio Dominican and Cedarville (334).

Leading the Eagles – and the entire field – after the first day is freshman Ben Jones. Jones fired a round of 2-under-par 70, coming off an OVU tournament in which he finished in third place with rounds of 71 and 76.

Senior Chandler Walnsch, who was second at OVU with rounds of 74 and 72, is tied for third individually through 18 holes on Friday with a 77.

Rounding out the AU effort on Friday were sophomore Patrick Steffen (sixth, 79), junior Austin Kondratick (tied for 12th, 81) and junior Cole Smith (tied for 22nd, 84).

UP NEXT: Day 2 of the Bill Blazer Memorial on Saturday (April 14).
