Eagle Men Lead GLIAC Championships After 18 Holes

Ashland University's men's golf team is on some kind of roll.

After winning its last two tournaments in preparation for the 2018 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships, which started on Friday (April 20) at The Virtues Golf Club in Nashport, Ohio, the Eagles lead the conference tourney after the first 18 holes.

Ashland fired a first-round 302, one shot ahead of No. 21-ranked Grand Valley State (303) and six shots better than Purdue Northwest (308). All 11 teams in the field are within 19 shots of each other heading into Round 2.

Junior Austin Kondratick and sophomore Patrick Steffen set themselves up for medalist contention after the first day of action. Their 2-over-par 74s trail leader Andrew Hammett of Ferris State by one shot. Steffen's round included four birdies (holes No. 8, 10, 11 and 18).

Freshman Ben Jones and senior Chandler Walnsch are tied for 15th individually following rounds of 77 on Friday. Walnsch birdied holes No. 6 and 17, while Jones was one shot better than par on hole No. 10.

Junior Cole Smith rounded out the Ashland day with a 78, including a birdie on hole No. 3.
