Jones Ties For Fourth, Eagles Sixth At Wayne State

Ashland University sophomore Ben Jones is having some start to the 2018-19 season.

Jones fired a first-round 68 on Saturday (Sept. 29) for the Eagle men's golf team at the Wayne State Hawkshead Invitational, and finished in a tie for fourth place individually following a 74 on Sunday (Sept. 30). Jones' 68 is the third-best score for the AU men since 1996-97, and in his first eight rounds of the season, his average is 72.25.

In four tournaments this fall, Jones has placed in a tie for fourth, a tie for 14th, a tie for fifth and a tie for fourth.

As a team, Ashland finished the weekend sixth in the nine-team field at 293-301—594. Grand Valley State won the event (292-292—584), followed by the host Warriors (289-297—586) and Drury (293-294—587).

Senior Austin Kondratick placed in a tie for 11th (74-72—146), while junior Patrick Steffen (76-77—153) and redshirt freshman Luke Tanner (75-78—153) each were tied for 27th. Senior Cole Smith (79-83—162) finished 51st, and sophomore Hunter Lowder (tied for 42nd, 80-77—157) played as an individual.

Ashland's men will finish the fall season on Oct. 14-15 at the Motor City Invitational.
