A combined 5-under par on hole No. 18 alone on Tuesday (April 9) allowed Ashland University's men's golf team to finish in sixth place in the 18-team Greyhound Invitational at Purgatory Golf Club in Noblesville, Ind.
The Eagles ended the three-day tournament at 292-294-295—881, giving them four consecutive sub-300 rounds heading into the 2019 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships, April 19-21 at Gull Lake View Resort, Augusta, Mich. Ferris State was the team titlist at 13-under 282-282-287—851, host Indianapolis was second (294-279-295—868), and Findlay took third (293-286-294—873).
Junior Patrick Steffen finished with the top tournament score for Ashland, ending the 54 holes at 2-under 72-69-73—214, and in a tie for sixth place individually. On Tuesday, Steffen birdied hole No. 16, then eagled No. 18 to cap the tourney in style – it was one of just nine eagles converted tournament-wide.
Senior Austin Kondratick was right behind Steffen, placing in a tie for 11th at even-par 69-76-71—216. He had four birdies on Tuesday, including two in the last six holes.
Sophomore Ben Jones had his low round of the invite on Tuesday, ending in a tie for 60th following a 78-76-74—228 showing. Jones birdied No. 9 and 18 in the final round. Senior Cole Smith slotted in at a tie for 64th at 73-79-77—229, and also birdied No. 18 on Tuesday.
Rounding out Ashland's effort on the week was redshirt freshman Luke Tanner, who was tied for 79th (82-73-77—232).
Ferris State's Jack Weller was individual medalist (67-71-69—207).
