Mendel's Goal Receives National Publicity on ESPN

The Ashland University men's soccer team has received a great deal of national publicity in the last week for an usual goal scored by sophomore defender Cameron Mendel on Oct. 27.

Trailing 2-1, the 6-foot-2 Mendel entered the game for his size and it came in handy right away. As TU keeper Cary Wilson lined up to kick a ball downfield, Mendel crashed toward him, leaped and the kick deflected off his shoulder and rolled into the net, tying the game at 2.

The goal was first featured nationally on the website Deadspin before being picked up by ESPN show Highly Questionable. Eventually, the play was distributed on ESPN SportsCenter's Twitter, Instagram and Facebook feeds.

The combined viewership numbers on the SportsCenter Facebook and Instagram accounts totaled nearly 1.5 million as of Friday (Nov. 3).

Finally, the play was shown on Friday morning's edition of SportsCenter as the No. 1 Not Top 10 play of the week.
