Davenport Tops Eagles In Road GLIAC Contest

The Ashland University men's soccer team took a 1-0 lead into halftime, but host Davenport scored three times in the second half to defeat the Eagles, 3-1, on Friday (Sept. 21) night in Grand Rapids, Mich.

The Eagles (1-4-1, 0-2 GLIAC) took the lead against the reigning GLIAC champions in the 28th minute, winning a free kick near midfield.

Junior Cameron Mendel played a long free kick into the box where junior Jordan Dees got on the end of a deflection and slid the ball just past the keeper and inside the post. It was Dees' first goal of the season and Mendel's first assist.

The Eagles played even with the Panthers for much of the game as Davenport held a 10-7 advantage in total shots. Davenport had a 6-3 edge in shots on goal and both teams had two corner kicks.

The Panthers (2-5-1, 1-2 GLIAC) got the equalizer in the 59th minute as the GLIAC's leading scorer from last year, Brogan Shrimpton, got on the board to make it 1-1.

Less than two minutes later, Davenport took the lead on a goal by Yovany Duran. With Ashland pressing numbers forward, the Panthers put the game away just 32 seconds before full-time on a goal by Miguel Flores.

The Eagles will look for their first GLIAC win of the season on Sunday (Sept. 23) at Purdue Northwest. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. ET.
