Eagles Downed By Northwood in GLIAC Championship Rematch

The Ashland University men's soccer team played its GLIAC opener on Friday (Sept. 20) afternoon, but lost to host Northwood, 3-0, in Midland, Mich.

The game was a rematch of the GLIAC Tournament championship game that the Eagles won by the same margin.

The Eagles (0-4, 0-1 GLIAC) are still looking for their first win of the young 2019 campaign as the Timberwolves (3-1-1, 1-0 GLIAC) put two goals in the back of the net in the first 16 minutes and were able to withstand nine shots on the day from Ashland.

The first goal came in the sixth minute as a short cross from the right wing was deflected by an AU defender into the net for an own goal.

In the 16th minute Jacob Mattia made a weaving run through the attacking third and the ball eventually found Jack Doyle for his third goal of the season.

The Timberwolves put the game away with a goal in the 83rd minute by Kie Dyer.

Northwood maintained a 12-9 advantage in shots and an 8-4 lead in corner kicks.

Sophomore keeper Hakeem Metzger made three saves in goal for the Eagles while Corbin Cecchini stopped four shots for a clean sheet.

The Eagles will look to get three points on Sunday (Sept. 22) at last season's GLIAC regular season champion Saginaw Valley. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m.
