Ashland University's men's soccer team dropped its second Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletics Conference game of the season on Sunday (Sept. 22) in Saginaw, Mich.
The game featured both GLIAC squads that made the NCAA tournament last season, and was a rematch from the postseason. The Cardinals got the better of Ashland again, 2-1.
The Eagles (0-5, 0-2 GLIAC) are still in search of their first win of the 2019 season.
"Effort, attitude, all those things were there today, but we are missing the experience and quality that won us games last season," said Ashland head men's soccer coach Oliver Slawson. "We will be better for the experience we are going through, but we have to find a way to survive what is happening to us and not be victims to it."
Saginaw Valley's Gustavo Bergmann got on the board first in the 20th minute. Thirteen minutes later, redshirt sophomore Kieran Paterson put the ball in the back of the net for the first time this season, his goal coming from the spot to even the scoring.
The all-important third goal in the game was scored by the Cardinals' Brady Walker in the 50th minute. Saginaw Valley was able to stave off the Ashland attack for the rest of the match to secure the win and move to 1-1 in GLIAC play.
Saginaw Valley had a wide margin in shots (17-9) and corner kicks (9-3) over the Eagles.
Ashland will be back at home for its next two contests, the next coming on Friday (Sept. 27) at 7 p.m. vs. Northern Michigan.
