Renner Named GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week

Ashland University men's soccer sophomore center back Joseph Renner was named the GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week the league office announced on Monday (Oct. 14) afternoon.

Renner is the first AU player to win a GLIAC Player of the Week award this season and is the first defensive honoree since goalkeeper Dimitrios Karousos won it on Oct. 22, 2018.

Renner was the standout performer in the Eagles' 1-0 win against front-running Davenport last Friday afternoon in Grand Rapids, Mich. He scored the game's lone goal in the 67th minute on a header off a restart.

That goal held up as the difference with Renner and fellow center back Fred Francis anchoring the back line with goalkeeper Marshall Ney. The Eagles (4-6, 4-3 GLIAC) kept their fourth clean sheet in the last five games as they currently sit in fifth place in the GLIAC standings.

It is the first time since Oct. 17-24, 2010 that the Eagles have recorded three straight shutouts.

Ashland has won four of its last five contests and will now play its next four games at home, starting Friday (Oct. 17) at 7 p.m. against Saginaw Valley (7-3-1, 5-2 GLIAC).
