Starting a four-game homestand on Friday (Oct. 18) night at Ferguson Field, Ashland University's men's soccer team lost 3-2 to Saginaw Valley State, as the deciding goal was scored in the 88th minute.

The Eagles' three-game winning streak was snapped, and they are 4-7 overall and 4-4 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The Cardinals now have won three in a row, are 8-3-1, 6-2, and are alone in the second place in the GLIAC table.

"Not the result we wanted obviously, but I cannot fault the things we do to be even in a game like this," said Ashland head coach Oliver Slawson. "Our effort, work rate and spirit is unmatched, our guys work so hard. Saginaw have been to more consecutive NCAA tournaments than (years) we've had a program.

"For us to challenge and compete in games with these types of programs says a great deal about my players and everyone associated inside the program. I cannot fault our guys."

Ashland broke the scoreless tie in the 34th minute, as sophomore defender Joseph Renner potted a goal for a second consecutive game. Renner flicked a Fred Francis (second assist of 2019) free kick into the back of the Cardinal net for the 1-0 lead.

Then, in the 40th minute, Kairo Coore tied the game at 1 for SVSU on a feed from Alex Gloshen. Coore's goal was his second of the season, and Gloshen's assist is his fourth of the fall.

The Cardinals moved ahead 2-1 in the 76th minute on a goal from Connor Rutz, but just one minute later, Eagle sophomore forward Kieran Paterson re-tied the game at 2 with a header in front of the SVSU goal for his third goal of the season. Senior defender John Duldner had the feed, his second of 2019, on a reverse bicycle kick.

Friday night's contest kept going back and forth, and in the 88th minute, Gloshen scored his fourth goal of the season in a 1-on-1 situation. Gabriello Calamita's assist was his third of the campaign.

Saginaw Valley State had a slight 11-9 edge in shots, and there were a combined 35 fouls in the contest.

Ashland will return to Ferguson Field on Sunday (Oct. 20) at 2:30 p.m. to take on GLIAC rival Northwood (7-4-1, 5-3).
