Eagles Stymied By Northwood in Tight Match, 2-1

The Ashland University men's soccer team dropped a 2-1 effort to visiting Northwood on Sunday (Oct. 20) afternoon at Ferguson Field.

The Eagles (4-8, 4-4 GLIAC) maintained 58 percent possession, but were not able to cash in on their opportunities.

Northwood (8-4-1, 6-3 GLIAC) scored in the second minute of the game to take a 1-0 lead as Kie Dyer deposited a shot past AU keeper Hakeem Metzger off a pass by Austin Hobbs.

The Eagles held a 7-5 edge in shots in the first half, Northwood keeper Corbin Cecchini came up with four saves before halftime to keep the hosts off the board.

The game opened up in the second half with both teams garnering good spells of possession in the attacking third.

The Eagles had chances throughout the second half. Sophomore Kieran Paterson and sophomore Joseph Renner had back-to-back shots saved early in the half with Paterson's shot from 16 yards lifted just over the bar.

Senior Jordan Dees equalized in the 65th minute as he beat everyone to the ball with his head off senior John Duldner's throw-in. it was his first goal of the season and Duldner's team-leading third assist.

The game was 1-1 for just 43 seconds as the Timberwolves went back in front on Dyer's second goal of the match. The assist came from Chase Clark.

Junior Justin Libertowski had two chances in the final two minutes, but Cecchini was equal to both efforts. The Northwood keeper stopped nine shots in the game.

The Eagles had a 14-12 lead in shots overall and the Timberwolves maintained a 6-2 lead in corner kicks.

Metzger made two saves for the Eagles.

Ashland will continue its four-game homestand on Friday (Oct. 25) at 7 p.m. against Upper Iowa at Ferguson Field.
