Eagle Men’s Tennis Wins Big On The Road

Ashland University's men's tennis team earned a 6-1 win at Walsh on Sunday (Feb. 10), the Eagles' first win of the young spring season, and the first for the recently-reborn program.

"We were very successful as a team today, and are grateful to bring home our first win of the season," said Ashland head coach Lexi Bolesky. "We look forward to continuing to raise our level and work to get better with every opportunity."

The Eagles were kickstarted by winning all of their doubles matches.

Junior Priyank Soni and senior Stanislaw Grzeslo won a gritty 7-6 match at first doubles. The freshman duo of Jordan Phelps and Stuart Brdicka cruised to a 6-2 victory in the second doubles slot. Freshmen Tche Kun Teng and Colten Clark won their match in the third doubles slot in another tightly-contested 7-6 match.

Ashland had earned the point advantage heading into singles and didn't let up. The Eagles won five of six singles matches, discarding of their opponents all in straight sets.

Soni won his match 7-6, 6-3, in the first singles spot, winning a tough first set. Brdicka, at two singles, also had a tough first set, winning the match 7-6, 6-2. Phelps tallied another win in three singles, a 6-4, 6-4 match.

At fifth singles, it was Clark who took care of business, a 6-2, 6-1 win. Grzeslo wrapped things up winning in the sixth singles slot, a 6-3, 6-2 match.

Ashland's next match will be on Saturday (Feb. 16) at 11 a.m. at Oberlin.
