Eagles Win Second Straight Match, Beat Oberlin

Ashland University's men's tennis team won its second straight match on Saturday (Feb. 16) against Oberlin College.

The Eagles managed to cruise to a 6-1 victory in the match. They got out to an early advantage, winning two of three doubles matches to secure the doubles point.

The freshman duo of Jordan Phelps and Stuart Brdicka won their No. 1 doubles match, 6-3. Junior Priyank Soni and senior Stanislaw Grzeslo won their match in the No. 2 doubles slot, 6-2.

"We had a very solid road win against a nationally-ranked Division III team," said Brdicka. "I'm proud of our guys for showing big fight. It's a promising beginning for our young team."

Ashland also went on to win five of six singles matches, all in straight sets.

Soni made quick work of his opponent in the first singles slot, a 6-3, 6-1 victory. Brdicka was next with a 6-2, 6-2 win in No. 2 singles. In No. 3 singles, Phelps was dominant in a 6-1, 6-2 win. Freshman Colten Clark also cruised to victory in a 6-2, 6-1 win in the No. 5 singles spot.

Rounding things out for Ashland was Grzeslo, who bested his opponent, 6-4, 6-2, in No. 6 singles.

The Eagles will be back in action at home on Sunday (Feb. 17), as they face off against Findlay at 4 p.m.
