Eagles Top Oilers In Close Match, 4-3

Ashland University's men's tennis team beat Findlay 4-3 on Sunday (Feb. 17) to win its third straight match.

"Our team played an amazing match today," said Ashland senior Stanislaw Grzeslo. "We had a rough start losing the doubles point, but we came on top in singles. I couldn't be more pround of the guys for the way they fought hard and carried themselves during the match."

"There is no better feeling than winning a close match like this with your team."

The Eagles did not get the point advantage in doubles, as they had in their previous two wins on their current win streak. The only duo to earn a doubles win was freshman Jordan Phelps and freshman Stuart Brdicka, who won 6-3 in the first singles slot.

Going down a point, Ashland needed to claw back into the match by winning four singles matches. The Eagles did just that.

Junior Priyank Soni continued his dominant run as of late by winning yet another match in the top singles spot. He went down early, losing the first set 6-4. Soni fought back from the deficit to win the match 4-6, 6-4, 6-4. The three-set match was the last to finish, and ultimately clinched the fourth point and the win for the Eagles.

Brdicka also kept winning with a hard fought 7-5, 7-5 win in straight sets.

Freshman Colten Clark won his match in No. 4 singles in straight sets as well, a 6-1, 6-4 victory. Grzeslo won a critical match in the sixth slot, 6-3, 6-4, to tie the overall score at 3-3, and open things up for Soni to pick up the win later on.

The Eagles will travel to Ohio Wesleyan on Saturday (Feb. 23) to try to win their fourth match in a row.
