Ashland Men Open GLIAC Play With Win

Ashland University's men's tennis team won its Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener on Saturday (March 23), topping Purdue Northwest, 5-2.

The Eagles won two doubles matches to earn the point in doubles play, and four of six in singles play.

"We came out with intensity and fought hard to beat the Pride solidly today," said sophomore Nathan Sims.

At No. 2 doubles, senior Stanislaw Grzeslo and junior Priyank Soni won thier competitive match, 7-6. That win turned out to be crucial, as the No. 3 doubles duo of freshman Tche Kun Teng and freshman Colten Clark went on to win as well, 6-2.

At No. 1 singles, Soni kept winning. He took care of Purdue Northwest's Moritz Gisy, 6-3, 6-3.

Freshman Jordan Phelps won in straight sets at No. 3, 7-6, 6-1. Grzeslo was dominant at No. 6 singles, winning, 6-0, 6-1. The only three-set win for Ashland came at No. 5. Teng won the match after dropping the first set 4-6, coming back and winning the final two, 6-4, 10-4.

The Eagles will play next on Sunday (March 24) in another conference match at home against Davenport at 8 a.m. in Lexington, Ohio.
