Eagle Men Soar On Day One At Hillsdale

Ashland University's men's tennis team opened its season on the first day of competition at the Charger Invitational on Friday (Sept. 13).

After the first day of competition, the A doubles team of sophomore Stuart Brdicka and sophomore Colten Clark is still unbeaten. On the other side of the doubles bracket in B doubles, sophomore Jordan Phelps and sophomore Tche Kun Teng are also unbeaten.

Brdicka and Clark won their first match of the day, 6-3. They won their second over Hilldale, 6-2, to advance to the final match in the A bracket. Phelps and Teng won their opening match easily, 6-1. They topped Tiffin's duo, 6-4, to move to the final match in the B bracket. The freshman doubles squad, Jacob Hoffman and Noah Brown, won their first match, 6-1. They weren't able to win their second match of the day and fell to the consolation bracket.

The Eagles were having success across the board in singles action.

In the A singles bracket, Brdicka won his first and only match in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3. Clark also won his match in the B singles bracket, 7-6, 6-4. In the C bracket, Ashland was dominant and is poised for an all-Eagle finale. Phelps won his match in three sets, 6-3, 2-6, 11-9. On the other side of the bracket, Hung Huynh, a freshman, won his first match, 6-4, 6-3. Phelps and Huynh are one win away each from playing each other to top the C singles bracket. In D singles, it was Hoffman who won convincingly in his opening match, a 6-1, 6-1 straight-sets victory.

Heading into Day 2, the Eagles have two doubles teams in contention for invitational victories, and five singles players.

Day 2 of action at the Charger Invitational will take place on Saturday (Sept. 14) in Hillsdale, Mich.
