Ashland University's men's tennis team began play at the Oberlin Invitational on Saturday (Sept. 21).
In the doubles No. 1 bracket, senior Priyank Soni and sophomore Jordan Phelps won their match, 8-5. In the same bracket, the freshman pairing of Noah Brown and Jacob Hoffman won an 8-5 match, as well. Sopomore Tche Kun Teng and freshman Hung Huynh also won their doubles match, 6-3.
In singles play, the Eagles won seven matches collectively. Hoffman won a three-set battle, 6-1, 5-7, 10-8. Teng won his match in straight sets, 6-4, 6-0. Soni also won his opening-round match in a three-setter, 6-4, 4-6, 10-8.
In the second round of singles play, four more Ashland men won their matches. Brown won, 6-2, 3-6, 10-3. Soni won another three-set match after battling back from a one-set deficit, 2-6, 6-2, 10-7. Sophomore Colten Clark won his match in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1, and Phelps also won in two sets, 6-0, 6-2.
The Eagles will play Day 2 at the Oberlin Invitational on Sunday (Sept. 22).
