Eagle Men Start Strong At ITA Regionals

Ashland University's men's tennis team left their mark on Day 1 of competition at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Regionals on Saturday (Sept. 28) in Grand Rapids, Mich.

Senior Priyank Soni, sophomore Stuart Brdicka, sophomore Colten Clark, and sophomore Jordan Phelps all won at least one singles match on Day 1. Soni, Brdicka, and Clark all went 2-0. Both doubles duos also went undefeated on the day.

Soni won two matches in straight sets against strong regional opponents. His first was a 6-2, 7-6 win over Ferris State's Mathis Guerre. Soni then went on to beat Paul Reynolds of Bellarmine in a 6-3, 6-3 match.

Brdicka was also 2-0 for Ashland. His first match was a 6-3, 6-3 win over Davenport's Jonathan Bulmer. Brdicka had to grind out a three-setter in his second-round matchup against Juho Kantola of Lake Superior State. He won the match, 2-6, 6-1, 10-4.

The third Eagle to go 2-0 was Clark. He won his first match 6-3, 6-4, over Purdue Northwest's Miguel Cepeda. Clark also won his second match in two sets, 6-3, 6-2, against Alec Oliver of Ferris State.

Phelps went 1-1, his one win coming against Cedric Rupa from Ferris State, 6-2, 6-4.

Clark and Brdicka were paired up in doubles play and went 1-0, winning their only match 8-2. Soni and Phelps also won their only doubles match, 8-5.

Day 2 of ITA Regionals will take place on Sunday (Sept. 29) in Grand Rapids, Mich.
