Six Eagle Men Advance To Championship Matches

Ashland University's men's tennis team hosted the first day of the Spreng-Smith Invitational on Friday (Oct. 11).

Six of Ashland's men are set to play for a championship in Day 2 of the competition on Saturday (Oct. 12).

Here's how they got there:

  • In the A draw singles bracket, senior Priyank Soni won his first and second round match in straight sets - the first, a 6-1, 6-4 win, and the second a 6-2, 6-1 win as he was dominant all day in singles play.
  • Sophomore Colten Clark also made his way to a championship match in the B draw singles bracket by winning two matches in straight sets. Clark won his first match easily, 6-1, 6-3. In his second match, Clark won his first set 6-3, and had to battle for a second set victory, 7-6.
  • In the B draw bracket, sophomore Jordan Phelps also advanced to the championship match that will be played on Saturday. Phelps won his first match by winning a hard-fought first set, 7-6, and the second set, 6-2. In his second-round match, Phelps won in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2.
  • The Eagles also will play for a championship in the C draw singles bracket. Sophomore Tche Kun Teng was dominant as well winning both his matches in two sets. Tche won his first match, 6-1, 6-2, and his second, 6-2, 6-1.
  • Freshman Jacob Hoffman only had to win one match to earn a spot in the D draw singles final. He had a bye in the first round, and toppled fellow Eagle, sophomore Chase Williams, in the second round, 6-0, 6-3.
  • One Ashland doubles pairing will play for a championship in the B draw bracket. Freshman Hung Huynh and Tche won their first match 6-1 to advance to the semi-final. Huynh and Tche won a chippy semi-final, 7-5, to advance to the championship.

Day 2 of the Spreng-Smith Invitational will take place on Saturday (Oct. 12) at the Deborah Liebert Karl Tennis Complex.
