Soni Wins Spreng-Smith Invitational

Ashland University senior Priyank Soni took the top spot on Saturday (Oct. 12) in the men's tennis Spreng-Smith Invitational hosted by the Eagles.

Soni stormed through the A draw singles bracket, winning all of his matches in straight sets. In the championship match, Soni won his toughest test of the weekend, 6-4, 7-5, to claim the top spot of the weekend.

There were several other notable finishes for the Eagles to close out the fall season. Sophomores Colten Clark and Jordan Phelps both advanced to the B draw singles final, but did not play the match against each other to determine a champion.

Sophomore Tche Kun Teng finished in second place, as he fell in three hard-fought sets in the championship match in the C draw.

Freshman Jacob Hoffman also earned a second-place finish in the D draw singles bracket, dropping a three-setter in the championship match. In the D draw, sophomore Chase Williams took third, winning his third-place match, 6-3, 6-1.

In A draw doubles, sophomores Stuart Brdicka and Clark battled back in the tournament to earn a third-place finish. They won their third-place match with ease, 6-1.

The Eagles placed second in the B draw doubles bracket, as freshman Hung Huynh and Tche dropped the championship match, 6-4.

Ashland concluded fall play with plenty to look forward to, as the spring championship season is a few months away, set to begin on Saturday (Feb. 1).
