Gulas Passes 700 Wins

The Ashland University softball team went 2-0 on Friday (Mar. 11) in Florida and head coach Sheilah Gulas reached another impressive number.

AU evened its record at 4-4 with an 8-0 win over Wheeling Jesuit and a 10-0 triumph over Edinboro.  The win over Wheeling Jesuit gave Gulas 700 for her career.  The veteran coach ended the day with a total of 701 victories. Gulas has been a college head coach for 24 years. This is her 15th year at Ashland and she has 498 wins on the AU bench. If AU can win two games on Saturday (Mar. 12), against Minnesota State-Mankato and Adelphi, Gulas will have 500 wins at Ashland.

Gulas has been named the GLIAC coach of the year in 2009 and 2010.  She has guided the Eagles to the NCAA Division II playoffs each of the last two seasons. A year ago, AU advanced to the Midwest Region championship series before losing to Wayne State, 2-0.  Ashland was 36-13 in 2010.

Friday's win over Edinboro saw junior pitcher Emlyn Knerem (Brunswick, Ohio) pitch the third no-hitter of her career.  In five innings of work, Knerem struck out 15.  The junior got plenty of offensive support. Senior outfielder Erica Miller (Indianapolis, Ind./Franklin Central) was 2-for-4 and knocked in three runs.  Shortstop Bri Woody (Cleveland, Ohio/Magnificat) was 3-for-3.  Third baseman Alyssa Kelley (Mentor, Ohio) and outfielder Kourtney Yarnall (Canton, Ohio/Perry) drove in two runs apiece.
