ASHLAND, Ohio -- The AU softball team scored a run in each of the second and third innings and senior right-hander Emlyn Knerem (Brunswick, Ohio) tossed a two-hitter in a 2-0 win over Southwest Minnesota State at the Rebel Games in Kissimmee, Fla. on Tuesday (March 6) morning.
With runners on second and third, sophomore Carly West (Ashland, Ohio/Hillsdale) drove in a run on a fielder's choice in the second inning.
In the third, back-to-back doubles by junior Franki Gironda (Akron, Ohio/Hoban) and freshman Taylor Menhart (Twinsburg, Ohio) produced the Eagles' second and final run.
That was all Knerem would need as she allowed a one-out single in the fourth and a lead-off single in the fifth. She worked around both hits flawlessly and finished with nine strikeouts and no walks in a complete game, improving her record to 5-0.
Freshman Jerrica Young (Loudonville, Ohio), senior Alyssa Kelley (Mentor, Ohio) and sophomore Cayla Seidler (Massillon, Ohio/Washington) also had a hit in the game.
The Eagles improved to 7-2 on the season while handing the Mustangs (4-1) their first loss of the spring.
Ashland has seven games remaining on its spring break trip to Kissimmee, Fla.
