Eagles Take A Pair From Lake Superior State

            The Ashland University softball team picked up two wins on Friday (Mar. 29) at Brookside Park, sweeping Lake Superior State, 5-4 in 11 innings and 5-3. This twinbill was originally slated to be played at Lake Superior State.

            Ashland is 10-11, 4-2 in GLIAC play.

            In the first game, the Eagles had a 4-0 lead after three innings. The Lakers battled back to tie the game and the teams were deadlocked until the Eagles pushed across a run in the 11th. AU had 13 hits.

            First baseman Franki Gironda (Akron, Ohio/Hoban) was 2-for-6 with two RBI, two runs scored and two doubles. Center fielder Taylor Menhart (Twinsburg, Ohio) went 3-for-5 and drove in two runs. Outfielder Kourtney Yarnall (Canton, Ohio/Perry) was 3-for-4 with three stolen bases. Third baseman Jerrica Young (Loudonville, Ohio) and outfielder Carly West (Ashland, Ohio/Hillsdale) banged out two hits apiece.

            The win went to Sarah Alley (Milford, Ohio), who pitched 5.1 scoreless innings out of the bullpen. Alley allowed three hits, walked one and struck out nine. Amber McDermott (Creston, Ohio/Norwayne) started and lasted 5.2 innings. She allowed four runs (two earned) on five hits.

            In the second game, Menhart was 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles and one RBI. Gironda went 1-for-3 and drove in two runs. Zoe Myers (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) pitched three innings in relief and received credit for the victory.

            The Eagles play a GLIAC doubleheader at Northwood on Saturday (Mar. 30).
