The Ashland University softball team split a doubleheader at Walsh on Wednesday (Apr. 9), losing the first game, 4-1 and bouncing back to take the nightcap, 3-1.
AU is 21-12 and 4-4 in the GLIAC. The Eagles have split all four conference doubleheaders they have played this season.
The Cavaliers are 21-12 and 9-5 in the league.
The first game started on a positive note for the Eagles. With one out in the top of the first inning, center fielder Taylor Menhart homered. Menhart, who's been on a tear for the last week, would finish the game 2-for-3. The junior is hitting .385 with two homers and 14 RBI.
That Menhart blast turned out to be AU's only run of the game. Walsh scored four times in the second inning to take a commanding lead. Chelsy Testa, the Walsh left fielder, had a two-run single in the frame and Jenna Head knocked in a run with a single. The other run came home on an error.
The Eagles, who were shut out in the second game of a doubleheader with Hillsdale on Sunday, could do little against Walsh's Casi Rohr. She raised her record to 12-7 with a complete game six-hitter. Rohr walked two and struck out four.
Brittany Flanigan (3-3) took the loss. She lasted five innings and gave up four runs - three earned - on nine hits.
AU only had four hits in the second game, but that was enough to get a win. Kayla Prokopakis delivered a two-out single in the third inning to bring home a run. A Shelbie Prince RBI single in the fifth inning produced another run. AU's third run came in as a result of an error.
Sarah Alley gave the Eagles a quality performance in the circle. She went the distance and tamed the Cavaliers on six hits. The lone run she allowed came on a sacrifice fly by Testa in the seventh inning. Alley (6-4) walked one and fanned six.
Quartni Whited (3-2) took the loss.
Ashland will play at Lake Erie on Thursday (Apr. 10).
