AU Softball Begins 2015 With Two Wins In Florida

Ashland University's softball team started both its 2015 season and its annual Florida trip with two wins on Sunday (March 1) – a 9-0, six-inning decision against the University of the Sciences, and a 3-1 victory over Gannon.

In the win against USciences, the Eagles collected 13 hits, including a pair of triples by senior outfielder Taylor Menhart. Menhart, sophomore second baseman Kalene Freshour, junior third baseman Kayla Prokopakis, senior shortstop Jamie Weber and senior catcher Jerrica Young each had two hits, and Prokopakis and Weber each had two RBIs.

Junior Brittany Flanigan allowed one hit and two walks and struck out five in four innings to get the victory, and senior Amber McDermott pitched two scoreless innings of relief with two strikeouts and allowing two hits and two walks.

In the victory against Gannon, senior Sarah Alley got the win with four innings of three-hit, one-run pitching. Alley stuck out three and walked two. Senior McKenna Galloway got the save after three innings of one-hit relief.

The Eagles will return to action in Clermont, Fla., on Monday (March 2) with games against Wheeling Jesuit at 3 p.m. and Southern New Hampshire at 5 p.m.
