Eagles Sweep At Malone, Reach 20-Win Plateau Before April

Ashland University's softball team earned its first doubleheader sweep in a week on Tuesday (March 31), winning a pair of five-inning games at Malone, 15-0 and 8-0.

The Eagles, ranked No. 24 in Division II, are 20-4 overall and 5-3 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The Pioneers are 2-11, 0-5.

In Game 1, Ashland plated all of its runs in innings two (nine) and three (six). Sophomore second baseman Kalene Freshour, junior first baseman Jen Moore, junior third baseman Kayla Prokopakis (both doubles) and sophomore left fielder Ally Farrah each had two of AU's 12 hits. Prokopakis drove in four runs, Freshour three and Farrah two.

Senior pitcher Sarah Alley upped her record to 3-0 with a complete-game four-hitter. She struck out eight and walked one.

Game 2 saw the Eagles score three runs in both the fourth and fifth innings to end the contest early. Senior center fielder Taylor Menhart and senior pitcher McKenna Galloway (triple, home run) each had two of the Eagles' 10 hits, and both Galloway and senior catcher Jerrica Young drove in two runs.

Galloway improved to 5-1 with a four-hitter, striking out two and walking two.

The doubleheader sweep pushes Ashland head coach Sheilah Gulas past the 850-win mark in her collegiate coaching career (851).

The Eagles go back on the road for two more GLIAC twinbills on Friday (April 3) against Grand Valley State and Saturday (April 4) vs. Ferris State.
