Softball Splits GLIAC Twinbill At Grand Valley

Ashland University's softball team fell one inning short of a doubleheader sweep on Friday (April 3), as the Eagles ended up splitting on the road with Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference rival Grand Valley State.

The Eagles took a 1-0 decision in Game 1, but yielded four runs in the top of the seventh inning en route to a 5-2 loss in Game 2. Ashland is 21-5 overall and 6-4 in the GLIAC, and the Lakers are 19-7, 5-2.

Ashland broke a scoreless tie in the opener in the top of the seventh inning on an RBI single by sophomore left fielder Ally Farrah. Farrah and senior center fielder Taylor Menhart each had two of AU's nine hits.

Junior pitcher Sarah Alley improved to 4-0 and dropped her season earned run average to a team-best 1.60 after tossing a complete-game two-hit shutout. Alley struck out five and walked six.

In the nightcap, the Eagles went into the seventh inning with a 2-1 lead, but four Laker runs on back-to-back doubles resulted in the split. Junior designated player Bri Buckley had Ashland's lone RBI in Game 2, and Menhart scored on a wild pitch.

The Eagles move on to another GLIAC doubleheader on Saturday (April 4) at Ferris State at noon.
