Eagles Turn In Quick Home Doubleheader Sweep Of Storm

Ashland University's softball team made quick work of Lake Erie on Saturday (April 11) at Brookside Park, earning 2-0 and 9-0 (five innings) decisions to sweep the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader.

Saturday's two games ended in 77 minutes and 71 minutes, but, more importantly, they move the Eagles to 25-5 overall and 10-4 in the GLIAC. The Storm is 7-15, 1-9.

Game 1 was dominated by junior pitcher Sarah Alley and sophomore second baseman Kalene Freshour. Alley improved to 6-0 and lowered her season earned run average to 1.24 thanks to a two-hit shutout. She struck out four and didn't walk a batter, and increased her consecutive scoreless innings streak to 25.

Freshour drove in both AU runs in the opener, an RBI single in the bottom of the third and an RBI bunt single in the bottom of the fifth. She was 2-for-3.

In Game 2, the Eagles put a six-spot up in the top of the first and didn't look back. Senior center fielder Taylor Menhart, junior first baseman Jen Moore, junior designated player Bri Buckley, junior shortstop Shelbie Prince and sophomore left fielder Ally Farrah each had two of Ashland's 12 hits, and Menhart and Buckley each drove in two runs.

Senior pitcher Amber McDermott upper her record to 7-2 with four shutout innings, striking out two and allowing two hits and a walk.

The Eagles will return to action on Wednesday (April 15) for another GLIAC twinbill against Walsh at 3:30 p.m.
