Eagles Sweep Dragons, Earn Second Double-Digit Winning Streak Of Season

Ashland University's softball team ran its winning streak to 10 games following 8-5 and 6-4 home wins against Tiffin on Senior Day on Sunday (April 19).

The Eagles, ranked No. 25 in the country and No. 4 in the Midwest Region, are 31-5 overall and 16-4 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference – good for second place in the conference, 1½ games behind first-place Wayne State. This is AU's second double-digit winning streak of the season, having won 12 in a row from March 5-24.

The Dragons are 20-18, 11-9.

In a see-saw Game 1, Ashland led 1-0 after the first inning, then Tiffin went ahead 2-1 after 1½ and 4-2 after 2½. The Eagles scored three times in the bottom of the third to go ahead 5-4, a lead they wouldn't relinquish.

Sophomore second baseman Kalene Freshour, junior catcher Bri Buckley, senior designated player Jerrica Young and sophomore left fielder Ally Farrah each had two of AU's 11 hits, and Young added two RBIs.

Junior pitcher Sarah Alley is 9-0 despite allowing seven hits and four runs over four innings, and senior McKenna Galloway earned save No. 3 with three innings of two-hit ball.

In Game 2, the Eagles took a 6-1 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning, but Tiffin had the winning run on first base with two outs before AU could close the game out.

Sophomore right fielder Jenny Raguz was 2-for-2 with a double, home run and four RBIs, and junior shortstop Shelbie Prince went 2-for-2 with two runs scored and an RBI.

Senior pitcher Amber McDermott is 9-2 after yielding two hits, one run and one walk in six innings.

Five Eagle seniors – McDermott, Galloway, Young, center fielder Taylor Menhart and shortstop Jamie Weber – were honored between games on Senior Day.

Ashland will return to Brookside Park on Tuesday (April 21) for a GLIAC doubleheader against Findlay at 3:30 p.m.
