Eagles Sweep Lakers, Have Glimmer Of Hope For GLIAC No. 1 Seed

Ashland University's softball team ended the 2015 regular season on a high note on Saturday (April 25), sweeping Lake Superior State in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader, 13-3 in six innings and 7-2, at Walsh University.

The Eagles, ranked 21st in Division II, are 36-6 overall and 21-5 in the GLIAC, and most likely are the No. 2 seed heading into the conference tournament, May 1-3 at Findlay, Ohio. If Wayne State loses twice at Saginaw Valley State on Sunday (April 26), however, AU will win the GLIAC regular-season title and be the conference tournament's No. 1 seed.

Ashland has won four games in a row, and 15 of its last 16. Lake Superior State is 12-27, 5-20.

Game 1 saw the Eagles pound out 12 hits, led by junior Jen Moore (3-for-3, RBI, two runs scored) and junior shortstop Shelbie Prince (2-for-4, two runs scored). Junior third baseman Kayla Prokopakis added a double and three RBIs.

Junior pitcher Sarah Alley is 12-0 after three innings of one-hit ball and five strikeouts.

In Game 2, senior pitcher Amber McDermott authored a complete-game three-hitter to improve to 11-2. She allowed two unearned runs and a walk and struck out five. Prince was 2-for-3, and Prokopakis hit a home run and drove in two runs.
