Softball Splits Again, Finishes GLIAC Tourney At 2-2

Ashland University's softball team was eliminated from the 2015 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament on Saturday (May 2), losing 4-1 to Saginaw Valley State in the tourney's consolation bracket semifinals.

Earlier on Saturday, the Eagles began consolation bracket play with a 3-1 come-from-behind win against Grand Valley State.

Ashland (38-8) will await the call for the 2015 NCAA Division II Softball Championship's Midwest Regional. The selections for the entire D-II field will take place on Monday (May 4) at 10 a.m. A spot in the postseason would be the Eagles' seventh in a row.

Against the Lakers, AU scored three times in the bottom of the fifth inning en route to the win. The winning run came in the form of an RBI double by junior first baseman Jen Moore. Moore, senior center fielder Taylor Menhart, sophomore second baseman Kalene Freshour and junior catcher Bri Buckley each had two of Ashland's 10 hits.

Senior pitcher Amber McDermott went to 13-2 after giving up four hits, a run and two walks and striking out one in five innings. Junior pitcher Sarah Alley earned her third save with two shutout innings.

In the game against the Cardinals, Ashland had four hits, and its only run came in the bottom of the fifth on a fielder's choice RBI from Buckley.

Alley allowed four runs (two earned), seven hits and a walk and struck out two for her first loss of the season (12-1), and McDermott threw three shutout innings in relief.
