Softball Loses Twice At Home To Ferris State

Ashland University's softball team lost a pair of Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference home games on Saturday (March 26) afternoon to Ferris State, 5-2 and 7-4.

The Eagles, now on a three-game losing streak, are 10-13 overall and 1-3 in the GLIAC, while the Bulldogs improve to 19-9, 4-0.

In Game 1, Ferris State jumped on top with three runs in the top of the third inning, then Ashland responded with a run in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI fielder's choice off the bat of sophomore third baseman Marissa Caraballo.

The Bulldogs added two runs in the seventh, and the Eagles' second run came in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI single by senior left fielder Shelbie Prince.

Prince was 3-for-4 with an RBI, while junior second baseman Kalene Freshour was 2-for-4. Senior pitcher Sarah Alley allowed nine hits, three runs and a walk while striking out five in five innings to take the loss.

The nightcap saw the Eagles score twice in the top of the first on Alley's two-run single. FSU tied the game with a two-spot in the bottom of the third, then AU regained the advantage with two runs in the fourth on a Bulldog error and a bases-loaded walk by Prince.

Ferris State cut its deficit to 4-3 in the bottom of the fourth, then took the lead for good with a four-spot in the sixth.

Senior first baseman Jen Moore and Alley each had two hits, and Alley drove in two runs. Alley took the relief loss after yielding four runs, five hits and two walks in three frames.

Ashland will return to Brookside Park for another GLIAC doubleheader on Tuesday (March 29) at 3:30 p.m. against Malone (10-8, 1-3).
