Softball Splits At Home With Michigan-Dearborn

In its final non-conference games of 2016, Ashland University's softball team split at Brookside Park against Michigan-Dearborn on Wednesday (March 30), losing 4-3 and winning 6-2.

The Game 2 victory saw the Eagles rally from a 2-0 deficit after a half-inning. In the bottom of the first, AU got on the board thanks to a Wolverine error. Ashland then took the lead for good with a three-spot in the second – an RBI single by junior shortstop Alexis Van Horn, an RBI triple from junior right fielder Jenny Raguz and a run-scoring single by junior center fielder Ally Farrah.

Single runs in the fourth and fifth innings rounded out Ashland's offensive output. In the fourth, senior designated player Sarah Alley singled to score a run. Then, in the fifth, Raguz's triple plated run No. 6.

Senior first baseman Jen Moore was 3-for-4 with a run score, Raguz was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored and sophomore third baseman Marissa Caraballo was 2-for-3 and scored twice.

Senior pitcher Brittany Flanigan upped her personal record to 6-3 with a complete-game six-hitter. She allowed two runs and three walks, and struck out four.

In Wednesday's opener, Ashland and Michigan-Dearborn traded single runs in the second and third innings, then the Wolverines scored a run in both the fifth and sixth innings to take a 4-2 lead. The Eagles scored a run in the seventh, but couldn't catch up.

Alley, junior second baseman Kalene Freshour, Caraballo and freshman right fielder Katie Mitchell each had two hits in the loss. Freshman pitcher Abbie Sgro yielded 13 hits, four runs and three walks, and struck out two.

The Eagles (13-14 overall, 3-3 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) will return to GLIAC play on Saturday (April 2) at 1 p.m. at Ohio Dominican (15-15, 2-2).
