GLIAC Tourney-Bound Eagles Take Two Losses At Warriors

Ashland University's softball team lost both ends of its Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader at Wayne State on Saturday (April 23), 12-8 and 9-1 in six innings.

The Eagles are 23-21-1 overall and 13-10-1 in the GLIAC, and are sitting seventh in the league standings. The top eight teams, Ashland being one, will advance to the 2016 GLIAC Tournament, April 29-May 1 in Findlay, Ohio.

The 2016 regular season will come to an end on Sunday (April 24) at noon in a doubleheader at Northwood (16-24, 7-17).

The Warriors lead the conference at 41-6, 20-2.

Game 1 was a tale of two scoring streaks. Ashland scored seven runs in the top of the second inning and one in the fourth to take an 8-0 lead into the bottom of the fifth. The second-inning highlights included a two-run double by junior shortstop Alexis Van Horn, a two-run single from senior left fielder Shelbie Prince and a two-run hit by sophomore third baseman Marissa Caraballo.

Wayne State, however, scored 11 runs in the fifth and one in the sixth for the comeback victory.

Senior first baseman Jen Moore and junior second baseman Kalene Freshour each were 3-for-4 in Game 1, while Prince and Van Horn each were 2-for-4. Senior Sarah Alley took the relief loss, allowing five hits and five runs and striking out two in 1 1/3 innings.

In Game 2, the Warriors put up three runs each in the second, fourth and sixth innings to end the game a frame early. Alley drove in AU's lone run in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single.

Senior Brittany Flanigan took the loss in the nightcap, yielding six hits and three runs in 2 1/3 innings.
