Ashland University's softball team ended its first tournament of 2017 at 2-3 following a 5-4 loss on Sunday (Feb. 26) afternoon against Wisconsin-Parkside at the Lewis Dome Invitational in Rosemont, Ill.

The Eagles jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning on an RBI bunt fielder's choice from sophomore right fielder Halle Dorko and another fielder's choice off the bat of freshman designated player Dayna Denner.

Parkside chipped away with a run in the third and two in the fourth to take a 3-2 lead, then Ashland tied the game at 3 in the fifth thanks to a Denner RBI single. The Rangers, however, retook the lead in the fifth on a solo home run.

Ashland tied the game again, this time at 4, in the sixth on a sacrifice fly from junior catcher Sadie Cunningham. The score remained knotted until the bottom of the seventh, when Parkside ended the game on an RBI single with one out.

Denner was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Junior pitcher Paige McMenemy (1-1) took the loss in relief, yielding six hits, two runs and a walk and striking out one in three innings.

For Parkside, pitcher Allison Hausl threw two scoreless innings with three strikeouts to move her record to 2-3. Carly Dundee, Cassie Walek and Madison Manders each had two of the Rangers' 12 hits.

UP NEXT: The start of the annual Florida spring break trip on March 5 against Southern Indiana (6 p.m.) and Southwest Minnesota State (8:30 p.m.).
