Ashland University softball lost its first two Dot Richardson Spring Games by one run each to a pair of teams with winning percentages at .750 or better in Clermont, Fla., on Sunday (March 5) night.

The first outing stretched to nine innings, and the Eagle pitching committee of junior Paige McMenemy, sophomore Abbie Sgro and sophomore Hannah Stroe allowed three earned runs against Southern Indiana. However, they did not outmatch Screaming Eagles freshman Jennifer Leonhardt, who struck out 11 and allowed just one earned run.

AU (2-5) fell to SIU (9-3), 5-4.

McMenemy showed some promise at the plate for the Eagles, recording the team's only extra-base hit as she doubled in the top of the second.

Senior Jenny Raguz recorded two of three Ashland RBIs. She went 2-for-4 with a run scored, as well.

In the nightcap, Ashland out-hit Southwest Minnesota State, 7-6, and recorded one less error. Ultimately, the Eagles left nine runners on base and lost, 4-3.

AU scored all three of its runs in the first inning. Senior Alexis Van Horn doubled to left field, scoring sophomore Kylie Asmus. Then, sophomore Paige Summers chipped in with a double of her own, driving in senior Alexis Van Horn and sophomore Halle Dorko.

Stroe took the loss in both of the day's games, allowing two earned runs over five innings of work against the Mustangs (5-1).

UP NEXT: The Eagles get back on the diamond on Monday (March 6) to take on St. Joseph's (Ind.) and Rockhurst at 8 a.m. and 10:30 a.m., respectively.
