Ashland University softball, scoring 3.6 runs per game, has relied on pitching through its first nine games of 2017.

The Eagles did exactly that on Monday (March 6) morning, pulling out a win on Day 2 of its spring break trip in Clermont, Fla. Ashland defeated Rockhurst, 3-2, and also lost to St. Joseph's (Ind.), 4-2.

Against the Pumas (2-7), junior Paige McMenemy allowed all four runs over 3 1/3 innings of work. Sophomore Abbie Sgro and freshman Jessica Wilson came on for 2 2/3 scoreless innings of work, but the Eagles did not overcome the deficit.

AU sophomore Kayla Troyer and junior Sadie Cunningham crossed home plate in the top of the seventh inning. Those were the Eagles' only runs in the game.

In the second game, sophomore Hannah Stroe allowed two runs in the first inning, but she blanked the Hawks (8-8) over the next 4 1/3. McMenemy came on in relief for 1 2/3 frames to secure the comeback victory for Ashland.

Freshman Dayna Denner hit Ashland's first home run of the season, earning two RBIs and putting the Eagles ahead in the bottom of the fourth.

Sophomore Paige Summers was the only AU player to record two hits in the game, going 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored.

UP NEXT: Ashland takes the field at 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday (March 7) to take on Saint Leo and Mercyhurst.
