Softball Splits On Last Day Of Florida Trip

On the final day of its annual spring break trip to Florida for the Dot Richardson Spring Games on Saturday (March 11), Ashland University's softball team split with Assumption (4-2 win) and Sioux Falls (7-5 loss), and will return to campus at 7-10.

In the win over the Greyhounds, the Eagles scored all four of their runs in the first three innings. Freshman outfielder Dayna Denner scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the first, sophomore third baseman Paige Summers followed with an RBI single in the second and senior outfielder Jenny Raguz (triple) and freshman catcher Cassie Haight (doubles) recorded back-to-back RBIs in the third.

Haight was 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles in the victory.

Sophomore pitcher Hannah Stroe earned the win with three scoreless innings of relief, allowing one hit and one walk and striking out one.

The loss to the Cougars saw Sioux Falls put up crooked numbers in the bottom of the first (two runs), third (two) and fifth (three) innings. The Eagles attempted a late rally, scoring twice in the sixth and once in the seventh.

Junior pitcher Paige McMenemy and sophomore first baseman Kylie Asmus each had two hits, Asmus scored twice and senior shortstop Alexis Van Horn had a home run and two RBIs. Stroe took the loss, yielding nine hits, seven runs (six earned) and a walk in 4 1/3 innings.

Ashland split its two games on each of the last five days of the Florida trip.

UP NEXT: Back to Ohio for a road doubleheader on Wednesday (March 15) at 3 p.m. vs. Urbana (3-5).
